Community Development & Services
This team plays a leading role in driving forward many of the district's priorities including youth and community participation.
Community Development is about building active and sustainable communities based on social justice and mutual respect. It is about removing the barriers that stop people from steering the issues that affect their lives. Councils used to decide what they were going to do for their communities; Councils now listen to what their communities want. Community Development Officers help people and organisations get their views heard.
Community Development Officers
- Work with residents and appropriate statutory and voluntary organisations to identify and respond to needs and issues that concern the development and enhancement of community wellbeing.
- Improve the ability of people to participate in voluntary groups and activities
- Enable people to build the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to participate in local democratic processes and to promote mutual aid
- Support the work of Elected Members as they respond to the wishes, aspirations and needs of their constituents
- The new Division is divided into two distinct but complementary areas: Area Community Development and Community Development Projects
The Area Community Development Team is supported by five Community Development Officers who act as Area Champions.
The second main area of work is the Community Development Projects Team consisting of officers responsible for dedicated areas of work:
- Children's Services
- Later Years Development (People 50+)
- Sports Development
- Health Development
- Equalities Development
There is close liaison between these two teams in order to involve local people in project development, and enable them to define their own needs and take action to meet them.
