Alcohol Free Zone

The Local Authorities (Alcohol Consumption in Designated Public Places) Regulations 2001 legislation gives local authorities the power to identify and designate public places where the legislation may be enforced. The police will then be able to enforce the order under section 12(4) of the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001.

An area within Royston including the Town Centre and surrounding area has been designated a ‘Public Place’.

Anyone consuming, or intending to consume, alcohol in the designated public place can be asked by a Police Officer to surrender all containers, open or closed, of intoxicating liquor. Refusal to do so will be an offence and could lead to arrest and a fine.
