Leisure Direct

Leisure Direct is a charity affiliated to Royal Mencap. It provides sport and leisure activities for adults over the age of 18 with learning disabilities and / or mental ill health in North Hertfordshire and Stevenage.

Leisure Direct organises a wide variety of sport and leisure activities for over 100 members, which range from pub meals to theatre trips and basketball to beetle drives.  There are also seaside and day trips, walks, picnics, table tennis, multi-sport, discos, bowling and much more.  Usually two activities take place each week and they are at different times of the day and week to enable all members to participate in something or other.  One annual holiday is also offered.

Leisure Direct works with other organisations to establish who and where potential members are, what activities they need, and then how those needs can be met. Getting involved in well planned activities can make all the difference to the lives of people with learning disabilities.

Membership costs just £10.00 a year and includes a regular newsletter.

Equal Opportunities
Leisure Direct has an equal opportunities policy which is that no member will be excluded on the grounds of disability race, colour, nationality, religion, marital status, age, sex, sexual orientation or financial background.

Leisure Direct will always attempt to cater for people with learning disabilities. However, there may be occasions when members need to provide their own specialist helpers should Leisure Direct be unable to access the necessary skills from volunteers.

Everyone will be welcome
Leisure Direct is funded by Hertfordshire County Council  Adult Care Services and is in partnership with NHDC.  Other money is raised through fund-raising, events and donations.

Volunteers
Leisure Direct has a regular band of volunteers who help in a variety of ways: they run the activities, raise funds, prepare refreshments and help with admin. or grant applications.  We are always looking for anyone who may be interested in becoming a volunteer, which is a very rewarding job. Volunteers are covered by insurance and if helping on our activities are required to have criminal record checks. Training is provided and volunteer costs are refunded.

  • Mobile Phone Recycling - Leisure Direct has teamed up with Community Fonebak, collecting old phones for recycling. Our mobile phone collection campaign collects phones which can then be sold in developing countries. We receive the money generated through the resale of these phones. In addition, Community Fonebak will safely recycle any phones that cannot be reused, thus ensuring minimum impact on the environment.   The collection is ongoing.  If you would like to donate your phone to Leisure Direct, please remember to delete all the information and remove  your sim card, then contact Leisure Direct, telephone 01462 474000, or email service@north-herts.gov.uk
