Health Improvement Modernisation Plan (HIMP)

Background

In response to Department of Health guidance some years ago, Health Authorities, and now local Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) across the UK, have been developing Health Improvement and Modernisation Plans.

These have been produced with the help of local authorities, and set out how the local NHS, district, borough and county councils and voluntary agencies, are working together to improve the health of everyone.

There are two PCTs covering the North Hertfordshire area: the North Hertfordshire and Stevenage PCT covers the majority of the district, but residents in the Royston area fall under the responsibility of the Royston, Buntingford & Bishop’s Stortford PCT.

Of course, this is an ongoing process and the Council will continue to work with the PCTs and others to inform you of the plans to improve the health of North Hertfordshire's residents. We greatly welcome your views and input to make sure that we are targeting the right priorities.

Should you have any comments on the Health Improvement and Modernisation Plans then please contact , NHDC Strategy Officer, on 01462 474309, or e-mail service@north-herts.gov.uk

North Hertfordshire and Stevenage HIMP

The North Herts and Stevenage PCT published its latest Health Improvement and Modernisation Plan (HIMP) for 2005-06, in May 2005. Compared with previous years’ plans there is a greater emphasis in the document on preventative action rather than cure. This was prompted by the 2004 Government Public Health White Paper called Choosing Health” that encourages: moderation in respect of alcohol consumption; addressing local health inequalities; giving more support for people with mental health problems; tackling obesity by improving diet and uptake of exercise; modernisation of sexual health services, and; supporting smoking cessation.

We've identified our priorities for North Hertfordshire and Stevenage in relation to three age groups - children and young people, adults, and older people - and these inform our action plan for the year ahead. The priorities, drawn from national and local priorities, include: accident prevention; drugs and alcohol; health inequalities and healthy lifestyles; mental health; sexual health and teenage pregnancy; cancer; heart disease and stroke; diabetes; and supporting vulnerable individuals both young and old.

You can download the full document, or selected sections, from the Key Documents” section of the Primary Care Trust website - click here.

You can email the PCT on admin@nhst-pct.nhs.uk or phone them on (01462) 708476 to request a printed copy of the summary and/or give them your views on our plans and what you think about the local services of the NHS.
