Revised Permitted Development Rights
On 10th September 2008 parliament agreed changes to the planning restrictions which govern whether extensions, alterations and other works to houses require planning permission. The intention being to enable householders to carry out a greater level of works without requiring planning permission where those works will not be harmful to the amenity of neighbours or the character of the area. These changes come into effect on 1 October 2008. An interactive guide to the new legislation is provided by the Planning Portal.
Those who have previously sought advice from the Council, whether informally or through a lawful development certificate, should note that the advice previously given may no longer apply if the works are to be carried out after 1 October 2008. Anyone carrying out works to their property after this date, where an enquiry about the need for planning permission has previously been made, is advised to seek further advice and submit a lawful development certificate
