Luton Expansion

Luton Borough Council and South Bedfordshire District Council have joined forces to draw up new plans and policies for the combined area.  A Luton & South Bedfordshire Joint Committee has been set up and is embarking on the task of preparing a new Core Strategy.

A key issue to be addressed in this document is where should new development go.  Bedfordshire lies within the area covered by the Milton Keynes & South Midlands Sub-Regional Strategy approved in March 2005.  According to this sub-regional strategy, some 26,300 new houses need to be accommodated in and around the Luton conurbation by 2021, with a further 15,400 in the decade 2021 to 2031.  Also, there are similar targets for new employment growth.

The Joint Committee has just published a Core Strategy: Issues and Options consultation paper, with public consultation running until the end of September 2007.  Some of the options being considered would involve new development in North Hertfordshire.  Hence the consultation document is far from being the only of interest to Bedfordshire!

Further details can be obtained from the Shape your Future website.  A questionnaire can be completed on this site if you would like your comments to be taken into account.

If the technical work concludes that development in North Hertfordshire is required the Council will prepare a Luton Area Action Plan.
