Your business will probably be totally dependent on telecommunications, electricity supplies and gas supplies and to a lesser extent on your sewerage and water utilities.  Ensure that you have their contact details and your account reference numbers available and stored in a safe place.

Plan ahead for extended disruptions and establish with providers how alternative supplies can be provided.

Ensure that your staff understand how to turn off “utilities”.  Ensure that your staff understand the implications of turning off services to your business and particularly any safety issues that this may cause.

Consider purchasing a portable generator but of course never operate a generator inside a building as it can produce deadly carbon monoxide gas.  Any electrical connections will need to be checked and certified by a competent electrician.  Therefore, it may be worth making a permanent installation available with a comprehensive instruction manual on how to operate the system.

It is also worth identifying how you will carry out communications with employees, customers and suppliers should you no longer have you main communications system working.  You should also identify a secondary means of accessing the internet.

If food suppliers are an issues then you should ensure that you a secondary means of providing vending and / or catering arrangements for your staff.
