Protect IT Equipment

Security Marking

Ensure that all IT equipment is clearly marked with a security code that can be recorded and held centrally for reference.  This code can be a formal security badge or can be a hidden marker visible under an ultra-violet light.

Replacement Equipment

A list of equipment should be held indicating the exact make and model with any necessary software and facilities being clearly indicated.  Combined with a security mark / number will provide an inventory should you need to replace this equipment urgently.

Offsite Backups

Ensure that if possible you have offsite backups systems available that will reproduce your working files and systems.  This will be invaluable should you lose, for any reason, your main systems.

Depending on the scale and size of your business, this may be a complete reproduction of your current system, the facilities to quickly reproduce your current systems, or back up software.

Support Companies

Clearly, as a business that undertakes Business Continuity Planning seriously, you will need to ensure that your main suppliers, customers and allied businesses operate in the same way to ensure your continuity as the result of a major incident.  Be prepared to ask to see your partner’s Business Continuity Plans and arrangements to make sure they link in with your own and that they can support your business should they be affected by any emergency situation.

Mobile Equipment

Mobile equipment needs to be protected particularly if being carried to and from the office to home by car.  The theft of IT equipment is big business and therefore staff should be made aware of not leaving items in full view and locking car doors when the vehicles are stationary.
