Staff Welfare
Emergency Working Hours
Ensure that your staff have adequate food, rest and recreation during a major incident and that they have adequate time at home to care for their family’s needs. Do not expect your staff to work for long hours during an emergency as the work may be far more intense than during normal working hours. You must also ensure that your staff go home after their shifts as some staff find it difficult to unwind and wish to remain at work to see through the emergency in a spirit of goodwill.
Re-establish Routines
When possible after a major incident, it is always good practice to resume normal routines as quickly as possible. Be prepared to identify different phases of your recovery to show that your planned approach to recovery is meeting it’s targets and milestones. Ensure that your staff know that you will support their families’ wellbeing during and immediately after a major incident.
Trauma
Trauma affects staff in different ways, depending on their exposure to the incident. Consideration should be given to trauma counselling to those staff seriously affected by the incident. Arrangements with specialist companies can be put in place prior to a major incident as part of your Business Continuity Planning arrangements.
Plans
Develop special plans to deal with medical emergencies such as a flu pandemic. A Business Continuity Plan can be developed for a flu pandemic in the same way as a normal Business Continuity Plan, which can then take special account of any needs regarding staff absenteeism, support and training needed.
