Baldock community groups benefit from NHDC grant funding

PR Date: Friday, 11 October 2019 - 3:30pm

North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Baldock District Area committee awarded grant funding of £2,000* to assist three community groups in Baldock at its meeting on 7 October.

Baldock Rotary Club was awarded £1,150 to assist with purchasing and storing Christmas lights for Baldock town centre and the Baldock Christmas Tree that is erected annually. The funding will also assist with the hire of a cherry picker crane to help install the lights.

Baldock Beats Waste was awarded £350. The aim of this group is to inform people about issues around waste and recycling and to change people’s recycling habits to help the environment. The funding will help with venue hire costs and with promotion of the group’s messages to the residents of Baldock and the surrounding villages. Christine Watson, Chairperson of Baldock Beats Waste said: "The group is delighted to have been awarded this funding. Our main method of communication so far has been through Facebook and word of mouth but this grant will help us to increase the number of open meetings we hold. One of our aims is to encourage the town, including schools and leisure groups, to reduce drastically the use of single use plastic, suggesting more sustainable alternatives."

Turning Worlds was awarded £500 to assist with running a series of dance workshops for residents aged over 55. The workshops will be run at the Baldock Arts and Heritage Centre. The group will also be carrying out roadshow style workshops in surrounding villages including Weston and Ashwell.

Councillor Valentine Shanley, Chairman of NHDC’s Baldock and District Area Committee said: "We are really pleased to be able to support this eclectic mix of community projects. From providing some Christmas cheer with the annual Baldock Christmas tree and lights, to helping with recycling education and providing dance workshops for older people, these are all worthwhile projects which will benefit our local communities."
