Four community groups were awarded funding at a meeting of North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC’s) Baldock and District Area Committee last week (5 March)*.

The Committee awarded £4,500 to support a range of projects that will benefit the local community. The grants were issued following applications made by Parish Councils, sports and social clubs.

The Baldock Community Forum was awarded £2,000 to assist with the purchase of equipment, including fencing, gazebos, event signage and high-vis vests to enable them to continue to run Baldock’s busy programme of events including the Baldock Big Lunch, the Baldock Half Marathon and the Baldock Cycle Challenge. The equipment will also benefit other groups and events within the area.

Cllr Jim McNally, Chair of the Baldock Events Forum said: "We’re delighted to receive this help from NHDC. The money we get will go towards to the development of community events in Baldock and helping other event suppliers".

Wallington Village Hall, which is widely used by the local community, was awarded £500. This will go towards the cost of purchasing bark chippings for the children’s play area. Following an inspection by, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), it was recommended that for health and safety reasons, the chippings should be replaced.

The Village Hall Committee Chairman, Graham Lamb, said "This grant will be a great support to our plans to keep the Hall and facilities an attractive, and safe, hub for the whole community."

The Weston Cricket Club and the Sandon Strollers Cricket Club were also awarded grants. Weston Cricket Club will receive £1,500 towards the purchase of a new mower, and the Sandon Strollers Cricket Club will receive £500 towards the cost of a new bowling machine and a mower. Both of these grants will help improve their pitches and enable them to attract new members.

Kevin Beard, Chairman of Weston Cricket Club, said: "Weston Cricket Club is delighted to be awarded the grant for the purchase of an outfield mower which will improve the quality of the ground for all players. We are most grateful to NHDC's Baldock & Area Committee."

Cllr Michael Muir, NHDC’s Baldock & District Area Committee Chairman said: "We are pleased to be able support these local community groups. We are thankful to the Baldock Community Forum for their programme of popular events which bring the residents of Baldock together. We are also pleased to be able to assist Wallington Village Hall and the Cricket Clubs so as they can spruce up their facilities".
