Black Lives Matter - Statement from Joint Administration

Council Offices in Letchworth Garden City

PR Date: Friday, 12 June 2020 - 4:30pm

North Hertfordshire District Council serves ALL the people of our towns and villages, and that does mean all the people. We are opposed to racism, share the horror of people around the globe at the killing of George Floyd, and stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the US, the UK and around the world, sharing the vital message that Black Lives Matter.

We’re proud to show our allegiance with people taking a stand against racism, calling out that Black Lives Matter and fully support the right of local people to engage in peaceful protest, even in these difficult times, when an issue is so important that they have to make their voices heard.

As people feel moved to attend organised protests, we ask that they remember that right now it’s safest for everyone to observe social distancing throughout.

As a Council, we intend, to take this opportunity to recognise the racism that still runs through our society and ensure that we demonstrate our commitment to being part of a positive change. To this end we pledge to take action to review our practices and ensure that in our own Council we improve the ways in which we respect diversity and challenge systemic racism.

Leader Martin Stears-Handscomb and Deputy Leader Paul Clark added:

“We are already committed through our Equality Strategy to tackle the disadvantage and discrimination that exists in our society. Our Shaping Our Future programme, which will be discussed at the Cabinet meeting on 23rd June has this as one of its key themes.

"We are determined to show that our actions follow our words.”
