Coronavirus: changes to cemeteries

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic we have made changes to our normal procedures for interments at our cemeteries.

Are the cemeteries currently open to visitors?

All North Herts district cemeteries are open to visitors as normal. Once within the cemetery grounds, please adhere to social-distancing where possible and only visit graves of your own relatives.

Can we hold a graveside service?

Graveside services are permitted with an unrestricted number of attendees for a full burial interment or an interment of cremated remains. We encourage you to maintain social distancing, limit close contact and continue to wear face masks.

Please do not attend a burial if you or anyone in your household has suspected or confirmed COVID-19 symptoms.

How can we access the cemetery to attend a funeral?

All the cemetery grounds within the North Herts district are still open to the public and accessible for burials. Cemetery staff will meet the funeral cortege at the appropriate cemetery to greet the Funeral Director and party.

When attending interments, if you need to talk to our cemetery or grounds maintenance staff, please maintain a safe distance for the health and safety of our staff and your family members.

Can the normal religious practices still take place?

The Funeral Director will direct you as to what practices can still be observed whilst in their care. If there is a Muslim burial, the mosque concerned will be able to advise on what practices they are still offering with regards to preparing the body for interment.

Traditionally, some families like to back-fill the grave of their loved ones or sprinkle soil on the coffin and we are continuing to offer this service. The Funeral Director must inform the Burials Team at the time of booking so that we can prepare sanitised equipment to be used.

Will the cemetery chapels be available for hire?

The chapels at Wilbury Hills and Hitchin Cemeteries have re-opened for hire. We ask attendees to check in using the Track and Trace QR code posters, maintain social distancing as much as possible and encourage you to wear masks in the enclosed environment of the chapel.

The toilets will be open for the use of chapel users and will be thoroughly cleaned between each use. Hand sanitising stations will be provided in the lobby area of the chapels.
