Council committee gives grant funding to good causes in Kings Walden and Offley

PR Date: Monday, 29 June 2020 - 1:00pm

A puppetry project for disadvantaged children and a North Herts based community centre recently received grant funding totalling more than £3,500* at a virtual meeting of North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Southern Rural Committee on 25 June.

The Young People’s Puppet Theatre will run a nine month puppetry project starting in September 2020, at Breachwood Green JMI School in Kings Walden. The £1,533 will buy high quality materials and equipment for pupils to design and make their own puppets at weekly workshops, designing and building show sets and a stage, assisting with lighting, sound and stage management and taking part in shows.

The project encourages pupils to work as part of a team, helping to build their confidence while combatting learning and communication difficulties and emotional and mental health issues, such as anxiety or pressure to achieve academically. In the spring of 2021, puppet show performances will be staged for 70 children and 100 adults from the local area. Plans to deliver workshop sessions online for the first four months are on standby if social distancing measures are needed.

Offley Recreation and Community Centre received £2,000 towards the purchase of a commercial lawnmower. The Centre is at the heart of the local community and its grounds are used throughout the year by residents. The lawnmower will help to maintain the grounds, which include a cricket pitch, football pitch and a play area. Local charity events are also held in the grounds during the year.

Cllr Claire Strong, Chair of NHDC’s Southern Rural Committee said: “We are very pleased to give grant funding to the Young People’s Puppet Theatre and Offley Recreation and Community Centre to help with their work and wish them all success in the future.”
