Deadline approaching to register to vote in the December general election

PR Date: Friday, 15 November 2019 - 1:00pm

North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) is urging residents to make sure they are registered to vote before the deadline of 26 November, so that they can vote in the General Election on 12 December 2019.

General Elections are a national vote for residents in the UK to elect an MP to represent their constituency in parliament and ultimately, to choose a Government to run the country.

You can register to vote online by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.You will need to enter your National Insurance number, date of birth and nationality.

If you are registered, ways to vote are:

  • In person at a polling station: You will receive a poll card, which informs you where you should vote – you can only vote at your allocated polling station. You do not however, need your poll card to go along and vote.
  • Voting by post: To register to vote by post, application forms must be completed and returned to NHDC by 5pm on 26 November 2019. If you are registered for a postal vote you will be sent your ballot paper before the election and you will need to post it back to NHDC.
  • Voting by proxy: Proxy voting means another person can vote on your behalf. To have a proxy vote, forms must be completed and returned to NHDC by 5pm on 4 December 2019.

Residents are also being urged to closely look at the location of their polling station on their poll card, as a number of polling station locations changed recently following a Polling District Review.

Changes to polling stations

The areas known as Ivel Court and Hadleigh now vote at Jackmans Community Centre not The Annex in the grounds of Letchworth Garden City Academy

Polling Stations at Lordship Farm JMI School changed to

The Cloisters Dining Hall

Polling Station at Icknield Walk First School changed to

Royston Leisure Centre

Polling Station at Tannery Drift First School changed to

Royston Golf Club

In addition, please note that if you have received a Poll Card notifying you that your polling station is at Wymondley JMI School this is incorrect. Your polling station is Wymondley Baptist Church. Amendment letters have been issued to affected electors.

David Scholes, the Acting Returning Officer for the North East Hertfordshire Constituency said: "If you want to vote in this election and are not already registered to do so, please register as soon as possible before the deadline of 26 November. Using the online system on the Government’s secure website is a quick and easy way to register. Your vote matters, please don’t lose it!"
