Holocaust Memorial Day

North Herts Council (NHC) is set to host an event to mark Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January.

The event will be streamed live on our YouTube channel. It seeks to encourage remembrance of the six million Jews who lost their lives during the Second World War, as well as millions of others who lost their lives due to Nazi persecution. The day also remembers those who died in genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

This year’s theme is One Day, which encourages everyone to come together to remember, to learn about the Holocaust, Nazi Persecution and the genocides that followed in the hope that there may be One Day in the future with no genocide. We learn more about the past, we empathise with others today, and we take action for a better future.

NHC are inviting secondary school pupils to take part in a creative writing competition on the theme of One Day, and the winning entries will be read at the event.

Primary school children are invited to create a poster around the One Day theme, with the winning entry featured at the event.

Please email entries to community@north-herts.gov.uk by midnight 16 January 2022.

Holocaust Memorial Day is held annually on 27 January, a date which marks the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi death camp.
