Armed services
Many people have become involved in supporting the service community through service charities, or by participating in Armed Forces Day. Many local community events are supported by our councillors and officers either by attending events or by making grant awards to enable events to take place. We are keen to continue that support. Aims of the community covenant
An armed forces covenant is a promise to ensure that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.
Local authorities and the armed forces community are encouraged to work together to establish a community covenant in their area in order to:
- encourage local communities to support the armed forces community in their areas and to nurture public understanding and awareness among the public of issues affecting the armed forces community
- recognise and remember the sacrifices faced by the armed forces community
- encourage activities which help to integrate the armed forces community into local life - either temporarily for serving personnel, or permanently for those leaving the forces
- encourage the armed forces community to help and support the wider community, whether through participation in events and joint projects, or other forms of engagement
A Hertfordshire covenant was signed on 13 December 2011 which can be found on the Hertfordshire Heroes website. A reaffirmation of the covenant took place in June 2022 at Hertfordshire County Hall.
We are committed to ensuring that armed service personnel and their families living in, or returning to the district, are fully supported, be that through more detailed consideration of individual housing needs, support from alcohol/drug abuse, or mental health charities funded by us.
