Council Tax reductions for students

If you are a full time student, student nurse or foreign language assistant, you can claim a reduction of up to 100% on your Council Tax bill if you meet one of the following criteria:

  • students in full time education: enrolled on a course which lasts for a minimum 24 weeks and 21 hours per week
  • students under the age of 20: study in excess of 12 hours per week on a course which lasts for more than 3 months
  • foreign language assistants: registered with the British Council

If every member of the household meets one of these criteria then a 100% exemption can be awarded.

If one member of the household does not meet one of the criteria then a 25% discount can be awarded.

If two or more members of the household do not meet one of the criteria then no student discount is available.

How to apply

You will need your Council Tax Account Number and your student reference number to hand.

The form will ask you for a ‘matriculation’ number - this is your student reference number.

Please upload your student certificate when you apply.
