Housing Grants

The Council offers grants to assist with improvement work in people’s homes in certain limited situations. The two types of grants that are available are Disabled Facilities Grants and Home Repair Assistance Grants.

Disabled Facilities Grants

Disabled Facilities Grants are mandatory grants available to residents who need to make changes to their housing accommodation to enable them to continue to live independently. The grants are available to owner/occupiers and tenants and can be used towards the cost of providing adaptations and/or facilities. Examples of works that can be covered by a grant are:

  • widening doors or installing ramps to make it easier to get into, out of and around dwellings;
  • installing a stair lift;
  • changing a bathroom to a level access shower;
  • adapting heating controls to make them easier to use.

The grant can include works up to a maximum of £30,000 but are subject to a means test.

Please see the leaflet below for more information.

If you feel you are eligible, please contact an Occupational Therapist at Hertfordshire County Council on 0300 123 4042/4043 and request that an assessment is carried out, or visit the Hertfordshire County Council website. The Occupational Therapist will send their recommendations to us. We will contact you to help you make the grant application and to get the required works carried out.

Home Repair Assistance

Home Repair Assistance is a discretionary form of assistance specifically designed to provide practical help, through a grant for small-scale works. This grant provides cash limited assistance up to £5000 within any three-year period, for minor works for owner/occupiers and private tenants who meet certain criteria. You must be in receipt of an income related benefit to qualify for this grant.

Please see the leaflet below for more information.
