Skills required for drivers
To apply to be a taxi or private hire driver, you must have:
- held a full driving license for at least 12 months
- an acceptable driving history
- good driving skills and an awareness of road safety
- no current convictions that would consider you unsuitable to transport members of the public
- a detailed knowledge of the area of North Hertfordshire, including street names, major landmarks and one-way systems
- good verbal communication skills
- good numeracy skills for handling cash
- the ability to deal with angry or drunken passengers
- an awareness of disabled access issues
To become a licensed driver, you must consent to an Enhanced Disclosure & Barring Service check and be able to satisfy DVLA medical requirements. Potential drivers must also pass a knowledge test.
Training and advice
There are courses available for drivers who wish to gain a qualification in taxi driving.
