How to Shop Safe, Shop Local this Christmas

Shop Safe Shop Local

PR Date: Wednesday, 9 December 2020 - 2:30pm

Christmas shopping won’t be quite the same this year, but with the High Streets re-opened, North Herts District Council (NHDC) is encouraging residents to shop safe, shop local.

Cllr Keith Hoskins, NHDC’s Executive Member for Enterprise and Co-operative Development, explains:

“We’re encouraging everyone to shop safe and support local businesses this Christmas. Buy online or via a click and collect service, order a takeaway, visit a shop or restaurant. Everyone who buys local will not only be supporting the local economy, but will also enjoy finding unusual gifts and receive excellent customer service. North Herts businesses are the heart of our communities, so let’s get behind them this Christmas and shop local wherever we can.”

NHDC has received funds from the European Regional Development Fund and Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government to ensure the High Streets are a safe place to be. New hand sanitisers are being added to town centres as well as planters to ensure physical distancing along the thoroughfares.

Cllr Keith Hoskins added: “The BID teams in our town centres have made a Herculean effort to ensure our High Streets are as safe as possible. However, we all need to take note of the latest safety advice to ensure we have a happy and healthy Christmas.”

North Herts District Council has also issued its top ten tips to keep everyone safe.

Top ten tips:

  1. Shop online from your local High Street retailer or take advantage of their click and collect services.
  2. Abide by the physical distancing signage – remember to keep two metres apart
  3. Fresh new hand sanitisers have been added to all town centres. Please make use of these hand sanitisers to keep your hands clean and to avoid passing on infection.
  4. When in stores, wear a mask at all times and avoid busy aisles.
  5. Handle as few things as possible, only pick-up what you want to buy.
  6. When you’re making a purchase use a card and don’t forget to bring your own bag.
  7. Avoid crowds and if there’s a queue, go back later.
  8. Treat yourself to an alfresco coffee, soak up the atmosphere and watch the world go by – at a distance of course!
  9. It’s Christmas! We all want to have a good time, so please remember to share the festive spirit and be respectful at all times.
  10. Remember if you have any COVID-19 symptoms please self-isolate.
