The winners of this year’s Chairman’s Volunteer Achievement Awards were revealed at a celebratory reception at Wymondley Priory Barns last Friday (8 February) .

The awards celebrate people in North Hertfordshire who volunteer and ‘go the extra mile’ to make a real difference in their local community. Organised by North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC), the awards were sponsored by Willmott Dixon, with The Comet as media partner.

Hitchin river gets its annual clean

The annual cleaning of the River Hiz outside of St Marys Church, Hitchin and Sainsburys in Whinbush Road, Hitchin is scheduled to commence on Friday 15 February.

These sections of the river operate via a ‘balancing tank’ system which, with the use of sluice gates that help retain river water in those sections, create a visually appealing, deeper river in the centre of town.

New survey seeks resident's views on community safety issues

A new survey has been launched today by the North Hertfordshire Community Safety Partnership (NHCSP), to identify resident's concerns about community safety matters in the district.

The survey invites residents to comment on crime, disorder and nuisance issues in their neighbourhood. Answers given will assist the partnership in prioritising resources and will also be used to inform and create a new Community Safety Action Plan for the district. The survey is completely anonymous and only takes a few minutes to complete.

NHDC Councillor reactions to the sale of 14 – 15 Brand Street

Cllr Tony Hunter, NHDC’s Executive Member for Community Engagement said: "We are delighted that we can now move forward and get the Museum fully open. Work to complete the final fit-out can now be kick-started, including completing the displays and building the café and the Museum shop. It is going to be a truly fantastic facility for the people of North Hertfordshire to enjoy, with never before seen items on display."

Arson attack closes public toilets at Howard Park, Letchworth

The toilets at Howard Park in Letchworth have been closed to the public after an arson attack caused severe damage to one of the cubicles.

The Police and Fire brigade were called out on the evening of Friday 25 January following reports of a fire at the toilets, which are owned and managed by North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC). A canister of lighter fluid was found at the scene and had been used to cause significant damage to the toilets.

Superintendent Julie Wheatley recognised at Full Council

At a meeting of NHDC’s Full Council on 17 January, recently promoted Superintendent Julie Wheatley was recognised for the exceptional contribution she has made to the North Hertfordshire Community, and Councillors placed on record their sincere thanks and appreciation for her service.
