North Herts Council has awarded nearly £5,000 in grant funding to support two community projects in the Royston area, and one in Letchworth following recommendations from the Royston and Villages, and Letchworth Community Forums last month*.
Barkway Parish Council were awarded £1,350 towards new display units at ‘The Reading Room’ - a meeting room which also operates as a small museum. The display units will enable permanent exhibitions of local documents, artefacts and materials that showcase Barkway’s rich history. The venue is used regularly by the Barkway Local History Group and other community organisations.
Barley Community Garden received £1,043 from the Royston and Villages Community forum to purchase two accessible raised beds (veg trugs), gardening tools and compost. The group run weekly volunteer-led sessions and community events, and the new equipment will make gardening more inclusive for people with mobility issues.
Resolve, a local charity supporting people recovering from alcohol and substance misuse, were awarded £1,000 from the Royston and Villages Community Forum budget and £1,500 from the Letchworth Community Forum budget to help fund a ‘Key Worker’ post at their Letchworth centre. The role provides group therapy and one-to-one support sessions, helping people on their journey to recovery and back into positive, healthy lifestyles.
Laura Hyde, Chief Executive Officer at Resolve, said “This donation will help us continue our life changing and sometimes lifesaving work with local people who are in the grips of substance misuse. One client described the impact of treatment with Resolve ‘I know without their support I would have been dead or at least lost my way of life and family’."
Cllr Daniel Allen, Leader of North Herts Council and Executive Member for Governance, said:
“We are proud to platform Barkway’s heritage, to help in making community gardening inclusive in Barley, and to support recovery and wellbeing through Resolve. North Herts is proud to support these local projects which all play an important role in strengthening our communities.”
