North Herts Council is inviting residents, businesses, community groups, environmental organisations and our partners to help shape our Sustainability Strategy 2025-2030. This strategy will guide the council’s efforts on emissions reduction, climate adaptation, and biodiversity.

The consultation runs from until 31 March (closing at 5pm), and we are keen to get your views on key priorities, and whether you think our proposed actions on net zero, biodiversity, and climate resilience reflect what matters most to you.

The council declared a climate emergency in 2019, committing to ambitious action beyond national and international targets. In 2023, an ecological emergency was declared, ensuring nature recovery is a priority for planning, habitat restoration, and biodiversity net gain.

Sustainability is now one of the four key priorities in the Council Plan 2024-2028. To support this vision, the existing Climate Change Strategy (2022-2027) is being expanded into a broader Sustainability Strategy. The themes include:

  • Net Zero by 2030 for the council's emissions
  • Net Zero district by 2040
  • Adaptation
  • Biodiversity

Cllr Mick Debenham, North Herts Council’s Executive Member for Environment, said: "Sustainability isn’t just about tackling climate change - it’s about building stronger, greener communities. This strategy will shape our future for years to come, and we need your input to make sure it reflects the needs and aspirations of everyone in North Herts. I encourage you to get involved and share your views."
