North Herts Council celebrates progress made at Letchworth Garden City housing development

Date

Councillors and officers from North Herts Council recently visited Gary Grindal Court to see the latest progress on a new affordable housing development in Letchworth Garden City, delivered in partnership with First Garden Cities Homes (FGCH).

The site visit, held on Wednesday, October 22, offered an opportunity to view the ongoing construction on Icknield Way and celebrate the milestones achieved so far. The scheme is named in honour of Gary Grindal, a former Cabinet Member and long-serving councillor for Letchworth Wilbury, who chaired FGCH between 2012 and 2018.

Gary was a passionate advocate for affordable housing, and this development reflects his enduring legacy of supporting residents in housing need. Gary Grindal Court comprises 57 homes, including both social rented and shared ownership units – providing vital housing options for people across a range of income levels.

The development has been made possible thanks to funding from both North Herts Council and central government, ensuring that every home is affordable. Cllr Mick Debenham, Executive Member for Regulatory, said: “We are delighted with FGCH’s development of Gary Grindal Court, named in memory of a valued former colleague who was a passionate supporter of the affordable housing sector and helping people in need.

“The addition of Council and government funding has enabled all of the 57 homes for local people to be affordable. The important social rented homes will provide an option for those on the lowest incomes and the shared ownership units will help residents on to the housing ladder.”

John Walton, Head of Development and Sales at First Garden Cities Homes, added: “Gary Grindal Court is a genuine partnership project and without the work of all local and national stakeholders these types of developments cannot come forward. We believe the scheme offers genuine additionality to the local community and I hope you’ll agree that it looks great too.”

The homes are due to be handed over throughout November 2025, with allocations being managed by North Herts Council’s housing team. For more information about housing, please visit our Housing Page.
