NHDC awards funding to over 50’s to tackle social isolation
North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Letchworth Committee has awarded a grant of £1,200 to the NH50+ Forum*; a social group for those over the age of 50.
Currently the group help approximately 40 individuals a month by providing access to information on exercise, mental health and dementia, benefits and financial matters, as well as occasional trips. The group meet once a month at community venues and cafes around Letchworth, Hitchin and Baldock. They hold events, social get togethers, talks and taster sessions. Members pay £8 per year for their membership plus a small charge for some activities.
The group will be using the funding to contribute towards the cost of the design and printing of leaflets in order to promote the group – they have found this is the most popular method used by older people to find out about what is going on locally.
Cllr Helen Oliver, Vice Chairman of the Letchworth Committee said "We’re delighted to be able to support this valuable group to make an even bigger impact. The work the Forum does, is of great benefit to older people living in our area, helping them to make new friends and feel better connected to the community."
Sweenie Gunasekera, Secretary for the NH50+Forum said: "A very big thank you to NHDC’s Letchworth Area Committee for awarding this generous grant to NH50+ Group. This will help us to reach lonely and isolated elderly members in Letchworth and surrounding areas in North Herts."
