NHDC backs campaign which urges young people in North Herts to be Fearless against crime

PR Date: Tuesday, 26 November 2019 - 12:45pm

North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC), in partnership with Herts Police and Stevenage Leisure Limited (SLL) is supporting the launch of a county wide campaign to raise awareness of the website service Fearless.org.

Fearless is the youth brand of the independent UK charity Crimestoppers*. Fearless.org is an easy to navigate website designed for young people where they can access non-judgemental information and advice on crime and criminality, and where they can pass on information about crime 100% anonymously.

As well as providing an A to Z of crime types and signposting where to access further information, advice, help or support, the Fearless website provides a secure online form to report a crime without giving any personal details.

SLL runs the Hitchin Swimming Centre, Royston Leisure Centre and North Herts Leisure Centre in Letchworth on behalf of NHDC. Given that these venues are hubs for young people, they are valuable in raising awareness of the campaign. Posters are on display at these leisure centres, as well as at NHDC’s Offices in Letchworth, helping to make the campaign messages visible across North Herts.

Jeanette Thompson, NHDC’s Service Director for Legal and Community said: "This initiative will better equip young people in North Hertfordshire to make the right choices and make it easier for them to report crime anonymously. By working together with our partners, I am confident we can empower young people in the district to speak up with the certainty of it being 100% anonymous, making their community safer and stronger for everyone."

North Herts Chief Inspector Sally Phillips from Herts Police said: "Fearless.org is an excellent online portal for young people to access information and advice about crimes, such as gangs and knife crime. I would encourage reporting of crime directly to the Police but the portal offers anonymous crime and information reporting also."

Regional Contract Manager at SLL, Lee Medlock said: "As an organisation that puts the wellbeing of the local community at the forefront of its activity, SLL is delighted to be an active partner in supporting the Fearless website service in the North Herts community."

*Crimestoppers is the only charity that guarantees complete and total anonymity for anyone who contacts them with information about crime or criminals. Usually there is also a cash reward which can be claimed secretly if the information should lead to the arrest and charge of a wanted individual.
