Hitchin Market prepares to reopen on Tuesday 2 June

PR Date: Tuesday, 19 May 2020 - 4:15pm

North Herts District Council (NHDC) is pleased to hear that Hitchin Markets Ltd aim to reopen Hitchin Market on Tuesday 2 June, and that a number of changes are being made to help keep shoppers and stallholders safe. These include restricted stall sizes and gaps between stalls to enable social distancing, as well as hand washing and sanitising facilities.

NHDC and Hitchin Markets Ltd are also planning for the future, exploring ways to enhance the market and maximise its contribution to the economic recovery of Hitchin and North Herts, in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cllr Ian Albert, NHDC’s Chair for Hitchin Committee, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming traders and shoppers back to Hitchin Market on 2 June. However, it’s important to point out that this date will be kept constantly under review in accordance with Government guidance at the time.”

Cllr Keith Hoskins, NHDC’s Executive Member for Enterprise and Cooperative Development said: “Hitchin Market is a valued community asset with a huge amount of potential. We are exploring a new vision for the market to help provide innovative new opportunities for those seeking different ways to run their business, as well as those starting a new career. We look forward to sharing those ideas in the coming months.”

John Simmonds for Hitchin Markets Ltd said: “We are keen to support our current traders to ensure their prosperity into the future and give residents the opportunity to shop local and in the fresh air. Social distancing measures such as wider walkways and two metre gaps will be in place to ensure that everyone can enjoy the market safely.”
