Taxi fares and tariffs

The council sets maximum fares each year for journeys undertaken in a taxi. As these are a maximum, fares can be negotiated downwards by the hirer.

Fares for out of district journeys can be negotiated prior to the commencement of the journey in both private hire and taxi vehicles. A fare card should be displayed in every taxi vehicle giving details of maximum fares.

We review the fare scales every year.

These are the current tariff rates as of 6 November 2023:

Tariff 1 (standard tariff)

  • £3.50 for the first 1,000 yards, or part thereof
  • £0.10 after the first 1,000 yards, for every 60 yards or part thereof OR for each 20 seconds or part thereof (waiting time)

Tariff 2

For hiring commencing between midnight and 06.00am, all day Sunday, and all day on Bank / Publicly-Declared Holidays:

  • £5.25 for the first 1,000 yards, or part thereof

Christmas Day surcharge

  • for hirings commencing on Christmas Day only, a surcharge of 100% will be applied to Tariff 1 (i.e. double standard tariff).

General information

All fares recorded by the taxi-meter are inclusive of value added tax (VAT) and are the maximum that can be charged for the journey.
