Opportunities to work at the local election

Do you want to do your bit to help bring democracy to the North Herts community?

There are a number of opportunities to participate both on election day on Thursday 6 May and on the days of the election counts, Friday 7 May through to Monday 10 May.

You will receive a payment for taking part. 

Special measures have been put into place adhering to the latest government guidelines around health and safety during the coronavirus pandemic. These measures will need to be adhered to ensure the safety of the staff and the electorate.

Presiding Officer

Date: Thursday 6 May 2021
Time: 6.30am – 10.30pm
Venue: Various – across the district
Fee: £250.00 plus £30.00 combination fee, plus a training fee: £29.60

To be a Presiding Officer you will need to have been a Poll Clerk on at least three prior occasions. You will be expected to complete an online training session prior to polling day. You must have access to a car for transporting the ballot box and sundry items.
Main duties will include but are not limited to:

  • The collection of your ballot box on Tuesday 4th May and Wednesday 5th May from the District Council Offices
  • Timely set up and clearing away of the polling station
  • Responsibility for the professional, smooth running of the polling station during the hours of the poll
  • Responsible for the accurate issue of and accounting for the ballot papers
  • Security of the ballot box, papers and all paperwork
  • Supervision and training of the Poll Clerk
  • Responsibility for accurate completion of statutory paperwork, including the ballot paper account
  • Transport of ballot box and stationery to the Count Centre in Letchworth immediately following close of the poll
  • Interaction with electors, agents, Station Inspector, Returning Officer, staff and officials
  • Adhering to the COVID-19 health measures put in place, in line with government advice

Poll Clerk

Date: Thursday 6 May 2021
Time: 6.30am – 10.30pm
Venue: Various – across the district
Fee: £150.00 plus £20.00 Combination fee plus a training fee of £29.60

You will be expected to complete an online training session prior to polling day. As a Poll Clerk you will be working at a polling station under supervision.
Main duties will include but not limited to:

  • Helping with set up and clearing away of the polling station
  • Accurate recording of ballot papers issued
  • Keeping the polling station tidy
  • Interaction with electors, agents, Station Inspector, Returning Officer, staff and visiting officials
  • Managing any queues that may build due to the need for social distancing
  • Adhering to the COVID-19 health measures put in place, in line with government advice

Verification and counting of the votes cast

Date: Friday  - Monday 7 May  - 10 May 2021( days to be confirmed )
Time: 9.15 am – 5pm (approx.) Breaks will be given
Venue: North Herts Leisure Centre, Baldock Road, Letchworth Garden City, Herts, SG6 2ER
Fee: £18.80 per hour

Count Assistants work in teams under the supervision of a Count Table Supervisor. You will be expected to accurately count the ballot papers into batches of 25. All staff will adhere to the COVID-19 health measures put in place, in line with government advice.

Postal Vote Verification / Opening Assistant

Dates: on 23 (pm only), 26, 27, 28, 29, 30 April 2021, 4, 5, 6 May 2021 all day (6 May includes a session from 9.45pm)
Time: Sessions 10am – 1pm, 2pm – 5pm AND 5.30pm – 7pm
Venue: Council Offices, Gernon Road, Letchworth, SG6 3JF (venue to be confirmed)
Fee: £12.50 per hour

Working in a team under supervision, you will open the returned postal vote envelopes and scan the postal vote signature statements. Accurate records must be kept. The workload will vary depending on the amount of completed postal votes received. Therefore days and sessions may be subject to change at short notice. You must be available to work on all the proposed days. All staff will adhere to the COVID-19 health measures put in place, in line with government advice.
