About us

North Hertfordshire is a large rural district with approximately 125,000 residents with four historic towns, Hitchin, Baldock, Royston and Letchworth Garden City. The Council has a clear vision: We put people first and deliver sustainable services, to enable a brighter future together.

The role

Would you like to play your part in helping us to run elections in North Hertfordshire? It’s good way to earn some extra money whilst helping your local community. A Poll Clerk assists the Presiding Officer at the Polling Station. The tasks can include the set up, greeting voters, checking Voter ID, issuing ballot papers and packing away at the end of the day are just a few of the tasks that you will be undertaking.

The experience you will bring

Customer Services skills are desirable as you will be communicating ‘in person’ with Voters. You must be over 18 years old, eligible to work in the UK and have a National Insurance number. Training will be provided for both roles and a fee of £30 paid if you complete the training. Polling day hours are from 6.30am to 10.15pm. Working in a polling station is not subject to the European Working Time Directive and due to this there are no guaranteed breaks and polling staff are not allowed to leave the polling station during the day. As such you should take enough food and drink with you for the day.

Political restrictions

You should not be working for a political party or working on behalf of a candidate at an election or related to a prospective candidate.
