Teen boxing project is ‘knocked out’ by grant funding from North Herts District Council

Non contact boxing

PR Date: Wednesday, 28 April 2021 - 5:00pm

A non-contact boxing project that helps to support teenager’s mental health and resilience, has received grant funding to help with delivery of its work during the coronavirus pandemic.

Growing Resilience in Teens (GRIT) received £2,930* from North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Coronavirus Community Support Fund to assist its delivery of non-contact boxing sessions, where participants can learn basic skills, techniques, tactics and strategies of boxing, but without making physical contact.

This innovative doctor led programme helps to promote healthy coping strategies to build resilience and reduce anxiety and self-destructive behaviour in teenagers.

When restrictions allow, sessions will be run by coaches at a local gym or via online video conferencing when this is not possible.

Demand to take part in the non-contact boxing sessions greatly increased during the last lockdown. The funding will allow GRIT to run additional sessions for 12 – 14 more teenagers from North Hertfordshire that are already on their waiting list.

Participants have coaches and mentors who range from 20 – 80 years of age that each receive in depth training. Many of these coaches and mentors have reported on the positive impact being part of GRIT has had on their own lives.

Dr Louise Randall, GRIT founder and Chairperson said: "We are extremely grateful for this funding, as it has enabled us to double our provision during the pandemic, and to reach out to young people who have been struggling."

Ian Couper, NHDC Service Director – Resources said, “We are pleased to support such a worthwhile organisation. It’s projects like this that really can make a difference to the lives of young people, helping them to cope with daily struggles and providing a positive focus and outlet. We wish them every success in the future.”
