NHDC awards COVID-19 grants for community groups

Fourteen community and voluntary organisations have been awarded grants from the North Herts District Council’s Coronavirus (COVID-19) Community Support Fund.

Grants allocated from the fund so far total nearly £60,000.

The fund has been set up to help community and voluntary organisations in North Herts who are supporting the districts most vulnerable residents.

Projects which have benefitted so far include:

Livestock returns to graze North Herts nature reserves

Weston Hills Local Nature Reserve in Baldock recently welcomed some familiar four-legged visitors to graze in its meadows this summer.

The English Longhorn Cattle and sheep are regular visitors to the site. North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) and the Countryside Management Service arrange for them to visit annually as part of the Weston Hills conservation grazing regime.

Grazing helps to manage the grassland at Weston Hills and increases its attractiveness to biodiversity – encouraging a wider variety of plants to grow and more insects to the site.

Garden waste customers to receive free 2 months extension

Garden waste subscribers in North Herts will receive two additional months on their current 12-month subscription, following a six-week suspension of the paid for service, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. 

Update: Government Grants for Businesses

Since 14 April NHDC has made payments of £24,610,000 to 1,946 businesses who applied for the government’s small business grant funding and the retail, hospitality and leisure grants. 

The Discretionary Grants Scheme closed on Friday 19 June. We received 279 applications which we are currently assessing and processing this week. Applicants will be contacted with a decision within the next 7 days.

Community grant helps Letchworth allotment project grow

A social and therapeutic horticultural project in North Herts is set to become more accessible to people with disabilities thanks to a £2,500* community grant from North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Letchworth Committee.

Green Care Norton CIC’s grant funding will help to install ‘safe walkways’ and raised beds at their Norton allotments site in Letchworth, making it easier for those with restricted mobility to get involved in allotment gardening.

Parking enforcement to resume in North Herts

Motorists are advised that from Monday 22 June, full enforcement activity in North Herts District Council car parks will resume, meaning car park users will be required to pay in full for their parking sessions. Enforcement activity will also take place in residential permit areas from 1 July for those people that are not displaying a valid permit.

Appeal for information after tragic discovery of two dead horses in North Herts

North Hertfordshire District Council (NHDC) is appealing for information after the discovery of a dead horse and foal near Newnham in North Herts.

The adult horse was discovered in the first week of June on private farmland near to Newnham Road - a road which runs between the A507 just outside of Baldock and Newnham village.

A week later on 8 June, a young foal was discovered on the side of the same road. It is not known exactly how long they had been there or how they died.

Public toilets in Hitchin and Royston not open today

Unfortunately we are not able to reopen the public toilets at Fish Hill, Royston and the Arcade, Hitchin today. We apologise for any inconvenience, however we need to review our risk assessment regarding reopening, in light of the Coronavirus pandemic and ensuring the safety of toilet users. We will issue a further update once we are able to reopen.

We are opposed to racism, share the horror of people around the globe at the killing of George Floyd, and stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the US, the UK and around the world, sharing the vital message that Black Lives Matter.
