A new exhibition featuring the works of a well-known local trans woman, Katie Wilson, will open its doors at the North Hertfordshire Museum in Hitchin next week.

From 2 to 28 November, The Woman Inside will feature a series of paintings dealing with both mental health and trans identity.  Katie has long suffered with depression and anxiety, and as part of her therapy has taken to creative painting and writing, publishing a number of books of poetry and lyrics exploring issues around her identity as a trans woman.  She is keen for people to discuss mental health openly and candidly and is actively involved in the local community.

The exhibition coincides with Transgender Awareness Week (13 to 19 November) which draws attention to the disproportionate discrimination and violence faced by transgender people, and Transgender Day of Remembrance (20 November) which commemorates those who have lost their lives as a result of violence.

Councillor Sam Collins, Executive Member for Enterprise, the Arts and Transport, said: “We endeavour to promote equality within our communities and do our best to prevent discrimination.  We want to build thriving and resilient communities and encourage everyone to visit the exhibition and experience these works for themselves.”

The exhibition is in The Arches, part of the Terrace Gallery at North Hertfordshire Museum, Brand Street, Hitchin.
