PR Date: Friday, 11 December 2020 - 10:15am

North Hertfordshire District Council’s (NHDC) Royston Committee have granted a total of nearly £2,500* to three community-based groups that work with children and teenagers.

1st Royston Scouts received £796 to help buy eight new tents that will be used by more than 85 Scouts, Cubs and Beavers. The tents will be used for training experiences during the pandemic such as learning how to pitch a tent. When coronavirus restrictions are lifted, the tents will be used for camping excursions. The 1st Royston Scouts has been operational since 1910 and is run by over 40 volunteers.

The 7th Royston Barkway Scout Group received £795 to assist with purchasing tents, lightweight cookers, lanterns, storage containers, bush saws and water containers. The Scouts will be trained in how to use the equipment ready for camping excursions during 2021, when coronavirus safety guidelines allow.  The 7th Royston Barkway Scouts was established in 1910 and is a registered charity. A total of 24 volunteers run the group which has over 90 children regularly attend from the Royston area, as well as nearby Buntingford and Chipping.

Melbourn Area Youth Development (MAYD) received £902 to assist with the costs of running a series of workshops for young people from Royston. The funding will enable MAYD to run two six-week workshops for young people aged 13 – 19.  Young people will have the opportunity to vote on the workshop themes, including music, dance, cookery, art, drama and sport. The two most popular themes will be chosen and run by Groundwork East. Part of the funding will also go towards hire of the Melbourn Recreation Ground Pavilion where the club is based. MAYD was set up in 2012 and provides a range of fun indoor and outdoor activities as well as support and guidance on a weekly basis during term time.

Cllr Tony Hunter, Chair of the NDHC Royston and District Committee said: “We are very pleased that we have been able to help fund the work of these excellent groups. Getting youngsters outside and working together as part of a team will help them build many life skills that they can take forward and use outside of these excellent projects. Not only that, but they will have great fun doing so and make many new friends which is a win all round! We wish them all the best with their future work.”
