NHDC launches youth competition for Holocaust Memorial Day 2021

HMD Day

PR Date: Friday, 11 December 2020 - 11:15am

To mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2021, North Herts District Council (NHDC) is calling on children aged 5 -11 to submit a poster, and young people aged 12-18, a piece of creative writing, which celebrate the people, groups, places and objects which bring us light in times of darkness.

The competition reflects the theme for HMD 2021 ‘Be the light in the darkness’, which encourages everyone to reflect and learn about other cultures, community cohesion and appreciating the diversity of people's different backgrounds and circumstances.

Entries will be judged by a panel including Cllr Martin Stears-Handscomb, Leader of NHDC, Cllr Judi Billing, NHDC’s Executive Member for Community Engagement and Cllr Terry Tyler, Chair of NHDC.

The winning pieces will be featured during NHDC’s online HMD Service at 11am on Wednesday 27 January 2021. The event will celebrate the contribution of young people to Holocaust and genocide education and commemoration.

Cllr Judi Billing, NHDC’s Executive Member for Community Engagement, said: “I would encourage as many young people as possible to take part in this creative competition. This is not just about remembering the Holocaust and all genocides that have taken place – as vitally important as that is - it is also about embracing ways that we as individuals and communities can light up the darkness.”

“I hope as many people as possible will join us in this act of remembrance on Wednesday 27 January”.
