River rubbish is Hiz-tory as clean up is set to start

PR Date: Tuesday, 21 January 2020 - 9:30am

The annual cleaning of the River Hiz outside of St Marys Church, Hitchin and Peppermint Court in Whinbush Road, Hitchin is scheduled to start on Friday 24 January.

These sections of the river operate via a ‘balancing tank’ system which, with the use of sluice gates that help retain river water in those sections, create a visually appealing, deeper river in the centre of town.

Water will be drained from the tanks, using the sluice gates to greatly reduce the flow. Contractors will then remove litter, silt and sludge.

Once work is complete the river will be returned to its normal level. Work is expected to finish on Monday 3 February.

The fountain in front of St Mary’s Church will also be serviced.

Cllr Steve Jarvis, North Hertfordshire District Council’s Executive Member for the Environment said: "We carry out annual maintenance on these sections of the river to keep it clean and visually appealing for those who visit. There will be minimal disruption to the surrounding area and work will take place during the day."
