Grab a free tree this Christmas and help us tackle climate change

It’s National Tree Week from Saturday (27 November-5 December) and North Herts Council is joining forces with the Tree Council to encourage people to #PlantForOurFuture to mark the start of the winter tree planting season. Trees and hedgerows are some of the most powerful tools in the fight against climate change – every tree will help us grow a greener future together!

The council is giving away 10,000 free tree saplings to help tackle climate change in the district. You can help improve local biodiversity and air quality, and help reduce your own carbon footprint by grabbing a tree at one of our events to grow and nurture at home – or give as an eco-friendly Christmas gift!

So far we have received over 1,000 expressions of interest for a tree sapling and distributed nearly 100. Those who have already emailed us will be invited to pick up their tree at one of the locations below, but fear not, if you haven’t contacted us you are also invited to turn up and take one.

All tree saplings are native to the UK and deciduous (they will shed their leaves each year) and although we cannot take requests, species will include field maple, silver birch, sweet cherry and hazel.

All you need is a suitable place to plant a tree, set back from roads, boundaries and buildings so they're not a nuisance as they grow. Ideally the saplings need to be planted before February 2022.

Councillor Steve Jarvis, Executive Member for Environment and Leisure, said: “Trees and hedgerows are powerful tools in the fight against climate change. And the good news is that we can all make a difference by planting a tree! Whether you plant a tree in your garden or organise a community event to plant many trees, every tree will help us grow a greener future together."
