Draft Sustainability Supplementary Planning Document (SPD)

The draft Sustainability Supplementary Planning Document (SPD) consultation took place between 4 January 2024 to 16 February 2024. The consultation is now closed. Thanks to all who took part. Comments received will be considered when drafting the final version. We will also produce and publish a document summarising the comments received.

The draft Sustainability SPD provides information regarding our sustainability expectations for development in North Herts and offers good practice guidance to residents and developers when developing proposals and submitting planning applications.

The SPD has been prepared to support policy SP1 (Sustainable Development in North Hertfordshire), policy D1 (Sustainable Design) and other relevant policies in the adopted Local Plan.

The Council declared a climate emergency in May 2019 and an ecological emergency in July 2023 and committed to ‘do all reasonable in the council’s gift to aim for carbon neutrality by 2030.’ A Climate Change Strategy (2022-2027) was subsequently developed establishing a framework for action to tackle climate change in the district.
