Help for Rough Sleepers

If you think you may not have a bed for the night, contact the Council straight away either by phoning us on 01462 474000 or online through our Housing Assistance Referral Portal.

Depending on your circumstances, we may be able to refer you to emergency hostel accommodation.

The nearest hostel is the North Herts Sanctuary on Nightingale Road in Hitchin. They can help you access other support services as well as advising on money matters including benefit claims, training, employment and other practical issues.

North Herts Sanctuary is also open to non-residents from 10am to 12 noon every day. Non-residents are welcome to access shower and clothes washing facilities. Clothes, toiletries and other practical items are also available as are drinks and snacks.

If you are aged under 25, we may be able to refer you to emergency accommodation available through Herts Young Homeless.

Report a concern

If you are concerned about someone you have seen sleeping rough in North Hertfordshire, please report this to StreetLink

StreetLink will notify the Council and our outreach support so that the individual(s) can be located and given appropriate support and assistance.

Cold Weather Provision

During the coldest months of the year, extra help is available for those sleeping rough in the district.

Emergency accommodation is provided at the North Herts Sanctuary hostel in Hitchin. As well as a bed for the night, clients get a hot evening meal and access to bathroom facilities and a laundry.
